Helpful Tips for Making Homemade Hamburger Buns
Check the Yeast. Ensure your yeast is fresh and active by checking the expiration date and testing it in warm water before use.
Water Temperature. Use warm, not hot, water to activate the yeast, as too high a temperature can kill it.
Kneading. Knead the dough until it's smooth and elastic to develop the gluten properly, which contributes to a nice texture.
Rising Time. Allow enough time for the dough to rise properly at each step, as this affects the buns' final texture and flavor.

Ingredients
3 ½ cups organic all-purpose flour
2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
2 Tablespoons sugar
1 large egg
1 ½ teaspoons salt
Sesame seeds (optional)
Directions
In a small bowl, combine 1 cup warm water, 2 ¼ teaspoons of yeast, and 2 Tablespoons sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for approximately 5 minutes or until the mixture becomes frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 ½ cups of flour and 1 ½ teaspoons of salt. Add the frothy yeast mixture, 2 Tablespoons softened butter, and 1 large egg to the dry ingredients.
Mix until a dough begins to form. You can use a stand mixer with a dough hook or mix by hand.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the kneaded dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
Place the shaped dough balls onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Cover the dough balls with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes, until they have doubled in size again.
Preheat your oven to 375°F.
If desired, brush the tops of the buns with a bit of beaten egg for a shiny finish and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and allow them to cool on a wire rack.
