Helpful Tips for Making Homemade Beeswax Candles

Reheating Wax. If the wax in your pouring container hardens, you can place the container in the oven at 350°F for a few minutes until it becomes liquid again. This allows you to continue pouring without interruption.

Don’t Overheat. Keep the heat low to prevent the wax from burning.

Why Use a Double Boiler to Melt Beeswax

A double boiler is a great tool for melting beeswax because it uses steam for indirect heat instead of direct heat from a stove or microwave. This gentle heating method allows the beeswax to melt slowly, minimizing the chances of overheating or turning out wonky.

How To Make A Double Boiler

To make a double boiler, you’ll need a saucepan and a shallow, heat-resistant mixing bowl. The bowl should sit snugly on top of the saucepan, with its outer edge resting against the upper rim to form a seal that retains steam. Ensure there are a few inches of space between the bottom of the saucepan and the bowl, allowing you to add water to the saucepan without it coming into contact with the bowl.

Yield: Six 4-ounce candles

Materials Needed

  • 2 pounds of beeswax pellets

  • 1 cup coconut oil

  • Candle wicks

  • 6 quarter pint jars

  • Skewers

Directions

Start by setting up your double boiler. If you don't have a double boiler, you can create one by placing a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water, ensuring the bowl doesn’t touch the water.

Add 1 pound of beeswax pellets and ½ cup coconut oil to your double boiler. Stir occasionally until the mixture is fully melted and blended. The coconut oil helps the beeswax burn more evenly and prevents it from cracking.

While the wax is melting, prepare your jars. Use hot glue to secure the candle wicks at the bottom of each jar, doing your best to center them. To keep the wicks centered while pouring the wax, wrap them around skewers and lay the skewers across the tops of the jars.

If you wish to add essential oils, you can do so once the wax and coconut oil are melted.

Carefully pour the melted wax into the prepared jars. Remember, the wax hardens quickly, so it is important to pour it as fast as possible. If the wax begins to harden before you're finished, simply return it to the double boiler to re-melt it.

If the wax in your pouring container hardens, you can place the container in the oven at 350°F for a few minutes until it becomes liquid again. This allows you to continue pouring without interruption.

Leave the candles to harden. Larger candles typically take about 5-10 minutes to set up completely. Once they have cooled and solidified, trim the wicks to your desired length.

Now you have your very own homemade beeswax candles, ready to light up your space with their natural beauty and delightful aroma! Enjoy the cozy ambiance and the satisfaction of having crafted something special by hand.
